Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a broad, solution-focused approach that helps individuals understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This approach suggests that if one factor is improved, the other two will follow suit, as they are all connected. It's effective for a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, and relationship problems.
CBT encompasses a variety of more specific therapies which more precisely target various problems and may be more tailored for specific persons. Some of the CBT-specific treatments Dr. Boswell provides in her clinical practice are:
o Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT helps individuals learn acceptance techniques and commit to actions that enrich their lives. This therapy is particularly effective in managing stress, anxiety, depression, and coping with chronic pain.
o Behavior Management and Modification Training: This therapy employs learning principles to increase desirable behaviors and decrease disruptive or harmful ones. It equips individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other conditions such as mood disorders, with strategies to better manage their actions and reactions.
o Behavioral Activation: This treatment supports to identify positive experiences, which has been shown to elevate mood and reduce symptoms of depression by targeting the B(behavioral) factor of CBT.
o Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): CPT is a structured, manualized treatment that assists individuals in modifying and challenging unhelpful beliefs related to a traumatic experience. This treatment involves the identification of core beliefs associated with the traumatic event, and how these beliefs impact daily functioning. This treatment aims to support the individual in improving their daily functioning.
o Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills: DBT techniques aid in managing painful emotions and decreasing relationship conflicts. They are particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing intense emotional states. While we do not currently offer full-scale DBT, our clinicians have specialized training in DBT and may utilize dialectics and skills in session. DBT skills can be interwoven into individual therapy or offered as a stand-alone treatment.
o Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): This therapy assists individuals in managing distressing obsessions and compulsions. It involves gradually engaging in exercises targeting obsessions while refraining from compulsions. Aspects of acceptance and distress tolerance are often used to complement this treatment. This therapy is designed to benefit those with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
o Mindfulness: Mindfulness helps to promote presence, acceptance, and effective emotional management. Mindfulness has also been shown to reduce stress, manage anxiety, improve overall mental well-being, and help rewire neural networks involved with attention. Our clinicians utilize mindfulness from the practices of Jon Kabat-Zinn to teach skills for staying within the present moment.
o Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): MBCT is a manualized treatment that combines cognitive therapy with mindfulness techniques. This treatment is specifically designed to treat depression and prevent relapse.
o Parent Management Training (PMT): PMT is designed to teach parents effective strategies for responding to their children's behaviors. Our clinicians recognize the crucial role of behavioral context and environment on a client’s mood and behavior. This treatment provides parents important skills and knowledge to help them feel more confident and effective in their roles as the primary support for their children. Parents work together with the clinician to target behaviors and practice strategies to meet the goals of the client and their families.
o Social Skills Training: This therapy equips individuals with ASD, ADHD, and mood disorders with the social skills they often find challenging, helping them engage and connect with others more effectively.
o Supportive Therapy: Supportive therapy is utilized when a client would benefit from ongoing help to meet their needs. As this technique is not time bound, patients may benefit from weekly, monthly, or general sessions with their clinicians. This therapy facilitates the development and implementation of coping strategies to navigate day-to-day struggles. Supportive therapy is often requested by those who have already completed an evidence-based practice and met their goals.
o Written and Narrative Therapies: These therapies guide individuals in narrating their trauma stories, facilitating the processing of thoughts and feelings related to the trauma. The clinician and therapist then work together to unpack trauma-based feelings and thoughts, which assists recovery.
